Non-travel tales (Blog #10)
If you must know, I think caught it in a hospital, a hospital waitroom to be more precise. There I was, unmasked, unsociable distanced in a packed waiting room with no ventilation, and to top it all I was sitting opposite and less than 6ft away from a woman who talked non-stop on her mobile whilst looking directly at me. Covid measures have relaxed, but you'd think a hospital of all places would still enforce something like mask wearing so as to minimise the risks to staff and patients alike.
On day one of not feeling quite right (symptoms were a bit nebulous) I tested negative. By the way, there are no guidelines or restrictions on anyone who has Covid. It's a free for all, do as you please, go forth and spread. Day two I tested positive. OK, I thought, I still didn't feel ill, just a bit of a headache, but nothing else to write home about. I only thing I felt was very tired, so I took to my bed to rest.
Nine days on and I am still testing positive and feeling very tired, despite going to bed early and not doing a great deal during the day. I have caught up with lots of listening, watching, and reading, but haven't felt like tackling anything that requires even an iota of concentration.
My wife also has Covid, same source we think, but entirely different symptoms. She's testing negative but feels awful, which sort of makes me guilty that I feel OK.
Our diaries have had to be cleared, with messages and phone calls going to friends we were supposed to be meeting. Before Covid, cancelling a lunch appointment with the words 'I'm sorry, we are going to have to cancel, I just don't feel right' somehow lacks the authority of 'I have tested positive for Covid.' You don't even have to list your symptoms, do you?
Anyhow, I am going to give testing a break, after all there's no obligation to do so let alone report the result to the authorities. The NHS track and trace app is being mothballed at the end of the month. It seems no one is interested in Covid anymore despite reading that cases are on the rise. There's talk of another booster, but if and when that happens is anybody's guess. Looks like we are just going to have to learn to live with it.
The upshot of all this is that I haven't been out of the house for nigh on 10 days, which is a shame because I had so much planned, but then again the weather hasn't exactly been wonderful.
Join me next time when hopefully I'll have some adventures to relay to you. In the meantime, stay safe. I tried and failed.
Cheers
Mike.
